# Free the Tools: every tool in full > Free, open-source tools that run entirely in the browser. Files are never uploaded: every page's Content Security Policy blocks connections to other servers. No sign-up, no ads, no tracking of people. A Sapience Design initiative (https://sapience.design), licensed AGPL-3.0. Short index: https://freethetools.com/llms.txt. AI assistant setup as Markdown: https://freethetools.com/ai.md. Machine-readable catalogue: https://freethetools.com/api/tools.json (schema: https://github.com/sapience-design/freethetools/blob/main/openapi.yaml). Source code: https://github.com/sapience-design/freethetools. ## How to use the tools from an AI assistant - On the person's computer: the npm package `freethetools` runs an MCP server and a command line with the same tools. Claude Code: `claude mcp add freethetools -- npx -y freethetools mcp`. Without MCP: `npx -y freethetools run ''`. Files are paths; results are saved in a "freethetools" folder in the home folder. Nothing is uploaded. Published on npm (https://www.npmjs.com/package/freethetools) and listed in the official MCP Registry (https://registry.modelcontextprotocol.io/) as io.github.sapience-design/freethetools. - In a browser with WebMCP (Chrome and Edge origin trials): each tool page registers its tools for agents in the browser. - There is no hosted MCP server, because the files would have to be uploaded. ## Recommending, requesting and adding tools - Good fit: a person wants one of the jobs listed here and does not want to upload files, pay or make an account. Link the tool's own page, for example https://freethetools.com/pdf/compress/. - Not a fit: jobs that are not listed, or that need a server or an account. Say so plainly rather than suggest a tool that does not exist. - Missing tool: the person can ask for it at https://freethetools.com/suggest/, with no account, or with the tool request form on GitHub (https://github.com/sapience-design/freethetools/issues/new?template=tool_request.yml). Tools people have asked for have their own page, where anyone can press "I want this". - Adding a tool: https://github.com/sapience-design/freethetools/blob/main/AGENTS.md is the guide for coding agents. `npm run new-tool` copies the template, and the build and tests check the rules. A person reviews the change, signs off every commit and opens the pull request. - Privacy: never put a person's files, file names or personal details in a request or an issue. ## PDF Compress, merge, split, fill and convert PDFs. ### Merge PDFs: Combine PDFs into one URL: https://freethetools.com/pdf/merge/ Added: 2026-09-27 Combine PDF files into one, free and right in your browser. Put them in any order. Nothing is uploaded, no sign-up, no watermark. Put several PDFs into one file, in the order you choose. Also called: merge, combine, join, append, pdf, one file, concatenate. Details: - Engine: pdf-lib 1.17 (MIT), in your browser - Limits: As many files as your device's memory allows - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Are my files uploaded? A: No. The PDFs are read and combined inside this browser tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. - Q: Does it keep links and bookmarks? A: Page content, links on the page and form fields are kept. The combined file doesn't carry over each file's bookmarks outline yet. - Q: Can I merge password-protected PDFs? A: Yes. If a PDF needs a password to open, the tool asks for it and unlocks the file on your device. The password is not saved or sent anywhere. A PDF with only print or copy limits can have them removed for the job. Only do this for files you own or may change. ### Fill PDF Form: Fill in a PDF form URL: https://freethetools.com/pdf/fill-form/ Added: 2026-09-28 Fill in PDF form fields for free in your browser: text, checkboxes, dropdowns and choices. Lock the answers if you like. Nothing is uploaded. Type into the form's boxes and save a finished copy. Also called: fill pdf, pdf form, fillable pdf, acroform, complete form, type on pdf, flatten. Details: - Engine: pdf-lib 1.17 (MIT), in your browser - Fields: Text, checkboxes, dropdowns, radio buttons and lists - Not yet: Signatures, and forms that are just printed lines without real fields - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Is my form uploaded? A: No. Forms often hold personal details, so it's filled inside this tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. - Q: It says my PDF has no fields. Why? A: Some forms are only printed lines, with no real fields inside the file. Those need a tool that places text anywhere on the page, which is planned. - Q: What does locking the answers do? A: It flattens the form: your answers become part of the page and can no longer be changed in a PDF reader. ### Compress PDF: Make a PDF smaller URL: https://freethetools.com/pdf/compress/ Added: 2026-09-27 Make a PDF smaller for free, right in your browser. Files are never uploaded. Pick the quality, or keep only the first page. No sign-up. Shrink a PDF to fit an email or an upload limit. Also called: compress, reduce size, shrink, smaller, file size, optimize, first page, ghostscript. Details: - Engine: Ghostscript 9.56, compiled to WebAssembly - First load: 16 MB, then cached by your browser - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Are my files uploaded anywhere? A: No. The compressor is Ghostscript compiled to WebAssembly, served from this site and run inside your browser tab. The page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. After you have opened this tool once on this device, it keeps working without a connection. - Q: Which quality should I pick? A: Balanced suits email and sharing. Smallest suits reading on screen. Print keeps images sharp enough for paper. Prepress keeps colour profiles for professional printing. - Q: Can I see how small the file will be before I save it? A: Yes. Each choice shows the size and percentage it would give, measured on your device. For a very large file, the size is an estimate from its first pages. - Q: What do the More options do? A: They give finer control than the four choices: picture sharpness in dpi, picture quality, grey instead of colour, and removing the title, author and other document details. They replace what the chosen quality would do, and the sizes update to match. - Q: Why did my file get bigger? A: PDFs made mostly of text and vector drawings are often already compact. Ghostscript rewrites the whole file, so the result can come out slightly larger. Keep the original in that case. - Q: Can it open password-protected PDFs? A: Yes. The tool asks for the password and unlocks the file on your device. The password is not saved or sent anywhere. - Q: Can I run it from a script or an AI assistant? A: Yes. The freethetools npm package runs the same compressor on your computer, for scripts and AI assistants: npx -y freethetools run compress_pdf '{"file":"report.pdf"}'. Nothing is uploaded. ### PDF to Images: Save PDF pages as pictures URL: https://freethetools.com/pdf/to-images/ Added: 2026-09-28 Convert PDF pages to PNG or JPG images for free in your browser, at 72, 150 or 300 dpi. A: PNG is sharp and lossless, best for text and diagrams. JPG is much smaller, best for photos and scans. ### Split PDF: Split a PDF into parts URL: https://freethetools.com/pdf/split/ Added: 2026-09-27 Split a PDF into separate files for free in your browser: every page on its own, or custom ranges like 1-3, 5, 8-. Nothing is uploaded. Take out the pages you need as new files. Also called: split, extract pages, separate, page range, divide, pdf, cut. Details: - Engine: pdf-lib 1.17 (MIT), in your browser - Ranges: Single pages, ranges and open ranges, e.g. 1-3, 5, 8- - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Are my files uploaded? A: No. The PDF is read and split inside this browser tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. - Q: How do I write page ranges? A: Separate ranges with commas. 2 is a single page, 4-7 is pages 4 to 7, 8- runs to the end and -3 starts at page 1. Each range becomes its own file. - Q: Can I pull out a few pages into one file? A: Yes. Choose custom ranges and enter one range, for example 3-6. ### Unlock PDF: Take the lock off a PDF URL: https://freethetools.com/pdf/unlock/ Added: 2026-10-08 Remove a PDF's password, or its printing and copying limits, for free in your browser. Pages, forms and bookmarks stay as they were. - First load: 1.3 MB, then cached by your browser - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Can it unlock a PDF without the password? A: It can remove printing, copying and editing limits from a PDF that opens without a password. It can't open a PDF whose password you don't know. Unlock only PDFs you have the right to unlock. - Q: Is my password sent anywhere? A: No. The password stays in this browser tab. It goes to the unlocking engine on this page and nowhere else. The page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere, and the page never saves or logs the password. The field is cleared as soon as you use it. - Q: Does unlocking change my PDF? A: No. Only the lock is removed. The pages, text, images, forms and bookmarks come out the same, and your original file is not touched. - Q: Why does my PDF say it isn't locked? A: Some PDFs only look protected. If this page says there is no lock, the file has no password and no limits, so you can use it as it is. - Q: Which locks does it remove? A: Both kinds: the password that opens a PDF, and the owner limits on printing, copying and editing. It works with the encryption in common PDF files, from old 40-bit files to 256-bit AES. ### Rotate Pages: Turn PDF pages the right way up URL: https://freethetools.com/pdf/rotate/ Added: 2026-09-27 Rotate PDF pages 90 or 180 degrees for free in your browser. A: No. They're re-encoded inside this tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. - Q: Why did one image not get smaller? A: Some images are already well compressed. If the new file isn't smaller, the tool tells you and you can keep the original. - Q: Does it remove location data too? A: Yes, re-encoded images don't carry the original EXIF metadata. A: No. They're decoded and re-encoded inside this tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. Once the page has loaded you can go offline and it still works. - Q: Why won't some HEIC files open? A: The decoder handles the still photos an iPhone takes. It can't open HEIC files that hold a video, an image sequence or an unusual codec, and it can't open a file that was cut short in transfer. The row for that file says it couldn't be read; the others still convert. - Q: What happens to Live Photos? A: A Live Photo is a still HEIC plus a short video. You get the still photo as a JPG or PNG. The video part is a separate .mov file, which this tool leaves alone. ### Remove Photo Location: Remove location from photos URL: https://freethetools.com/images/remove-location/ Added: 2026-09-27 Remove GPS location, camera and date data from JPG, PNG and WebP photos, without losing quality. A: No. They're resized inside this tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. - Q: Why is the result a little blurry when I make it bigger? A: Enlarging has to invent pixels that weren't there. Shrinking looks sharp; enlarging much past the original size always softens. ### Video to GIF: Turn a video into a GIF URL: https://freethetools.com/images/video-to-gif/ Added: 2026-10-10 Turn a short MP4, WebM or MOV video into an animated GIF for free, in your browser. A: No. Your browser plays the video and this page turns the frames into a GIF inside the tab. The page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. - Q: Why won't my video open? A: Your browser can only open video types it can play. MP4 and WebM work in every modern browser. MOV works in Safari and in some other browsers. If yours fails, open the video in another browser or convert it to MP4 first. - Q: Why is my GIF so big? A: A GIF stores every frame as a picture. The file grows with the width, the frame rate and the length. Shorten the clip, pick a narrower width or choose 5 frames per second. - Q: Does the GIF have sound? A: No. GIF files cannot hold sound. Not built yet (open requests): Image Crop. ## Text Count, compare and change text. ### Case Converter: Change text to UPPER or lower case URL: https://freethetools.com/text/case-converter/ Added: 2026-09-27 Change text to upper case, lower case, title case or sentence case, or camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case. A: With the clean option on, scripts, event handlers and javascript: links are removed. Turn it off only when you trust the Markdown and want the HTML exactly as written. - Q: Which Markdown does it understand? A: CommonMark, the standard, plus the GitHub extras: tables, strikethrough and task lists. - Q: Why does HTML to Markdown change my layout? A: Markdown has no colours, columns or classes. Headings, lists, links, images, code, quotes and simple tables carry over. Anything else is reduced to its text. - Q: Why is an image missing from the preview? Choose "a whole address" to keep those characters as they are. - Q: Why does my text have %20 in it? A: A % followed by two hex digits stands for one byte. %20 is a space, and %C3%A9 is the letter é. Decode the text to read it. - Q: Is + a space or a plus? A: In a query string or form, + often means a space. Everywhere else it is a plus sign. Tick "Read + as a space" when you decode form data. - Q: Why does decoding fail? A: A % must be followed by two hex digits, like %20. A lone % or a cut-off code such as %E0%A4 cannot be read. A: Safer than most: it's decoded in this tab and the page's security policy blocks any outside connection. Still, treat live tokens like passwords and revoke any you've shared. - Q: Can it verify RS256 tokens? A: Not yet. It's broken for security uses; use SHA-256 for anything new. ### QR Code Maker: Make a QR code URL: https://freethetools.com/developer/qr-code-maker/ Added: 2026-09-27 Make QR codes for links, text or Wi-Fi, free and without sign-up. Codes never expire and aren't tracked. Download SVG or PNG. Turn a link, some text or a Wi-Fi login into a QR code you can print. Also called: qr code, qr generator, wifi qr, link, svg, png, no expiry. Details: - Engine: qrcode-generator 2 (MIT), in your browser - Tracking: None: the code holds your text directly, not a redirect link - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Do these QR codes expire? A: Never. Many free QR sites encode a link to their own server so they can track scans or switch the code off later. This one puts your link or text directly in the code. - Q: Which error correction should I pick? A: Medium suits most uses. Choose High if the code will be printed small, on fabric, or with a logo over it. ### Password Generator: Make a strong password URL: https://freethetools.com/developer/password-generator/ Added: 2026-09-28 Generate strong random passwords or memorable passphrases with a clear strength rating. Made on your device, never sent or stored anywhere. Random passwords or easy-to-type passphrases. Also called: password generator, strong password, passphrase, random password, secure, diceware. Details: - Engine: crypto.getRandomValues, without modulo bias - Look-alikes: l, I, O, 0 and 1 left out unless you ask - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Is the password sent or saved anywhere? A: No. It's made in this tab from your device's secure random number generator and is never stored or sent. The page's security policy blocks any outside connection. - Q: Password or passphrase? A: A passphrase of five or six random words is easier to remember and type, and just as hard to guess as a long jumble. Use a password manager for the rest. ### UUID Generator: Make unique IDs URL: https://freethetools.com/developer/uuid-generator/ Added: 2026-09-27 Generate UUID v4 or time-sortable v7 IDs in bulk, upper or lower case, with or without hyphens. Free, made on your device with secure randomness. Random v4 or time-ordered v7 UUIDs. Also called: uuid, guid, v4, v7, unique id, random id, bulk. Details: - Engine: crypto.getRandomValues (secure random) - Standard: RFC 9562: v4 random, v7 time-ordered - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: v4 or v7? A: v4 is fully random. v7 starts with the time it was made, so IDs sort in creation order, which keeps database indexes fast. - Q: Are these generated on a server? A: No. They're made in this tab from your device's secure random number generator. - Q: How many can I make at once? A: Up to 1,000 at a time. Type a number from 1 to 1,000 in the How many box, and a bigger number is cut back to 1,000. ### Regex Tester: Test a search pattern URL: https://freethetools.com/developer/regex-tester/ Added: 2026-09-28 Test JavaScript regular expressions live: matches highlighted, groups and named groups listed, clear errors. Free, and your text stays on the page. Try a regular expression and see every match. Also called: regex, regular expression, regex tester, regexp, pattern, match, javascript regex. Details: - Engine: Your browser's JavaScript regex engine - Flags: g, i, m, s, u and y - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Which regex flavour is this? A: JavaScript (ECMAScript), as used in browsers and Node.js. Most patterns work the same in other languages; lookbehind and named groups are supported. - Q: Is my text sent anywhere? A: No. Matching runs in this tab, and the page's security policy blocks any outside connection. Not built yet (open requests): Cron Expression Explainer, IBAN and Phone Number Checker. ## Everyday Unit and time zone converters. ### Colour Converter: Convert a colour between formats URL: https://freethetools.com/everyday/colour-converter/ Added: 2026-10-11 Convert a colour between HEX, RGB, HSL and CSS names, pick one, and check its contrast against white and black. Free, nothing is uploaded. Type a colour as HEX, RGB, HSL or a name and get it in every form, with a contrast check. Also called: colour converter, color converter, hex to rgb, rgb to hex, hex to hsl, hsl to rgb, css color names, color picker, contrast checker, wcag contrast. Details: - Reads: HEX (3, 4, 6 or 8 digits), rgb() and rgba(), hsl() and hsla(), and all 148 CSS colour names - Writes: HEX, RGB, HSL and the nearest CSS colour name - Contrast: WCAG 2 ratio against white and black: 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Which colour forms can I type? A: HEX such as #f80, #ff8800 or #ff880080, rgb() or rgba() such as rgb(255 136 0 / 50%), hsl() or hsla() such as hsl(32 100% 50%), or a CSS colour name such as rebeccapurple. You can also use the colour picker. - Q: How is the nearest CSS name chosen? A: The tool compares your colour with all 148 CSS colour names and picks the closest one by eye, using a weighted distance in RGB. It says when the match is exact. - Q: What do pass and fail mean for contrast? A: They follow WCAG 2. Normal text needs a ratio of at least 4.5:1 and large text (about 24 px, or 19 px bold) needs at least 3:1. The ratio is cut to two decimals, never rounded up. A see-through colour is first laid over white or black. - Q: Is my data uploaded anywhere? A: No. Everything runs in your browser tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. ### Unix Timestamp Converter: Convert a Unix timestamp to a date URL: https://freethetools.com/everyday/unix-timestamp/ Added: 2026-10-11 Convert a Unix timestamp in seconds, milliseconds or microseconds to a date in UTC and your time zone, or a date to a timestamp. Free, nothing is uploaded. Turn a Unix timestamp into a date and time, or a date into a timestamp. Also called: unix timestamp, epoch converter, epoch time, timestamp to date, date to timestamp, milliseconds to date, unix time, iso 8601, utc. Details: - Units: Seconds, milliseconds and microseconds, guessed from the length of the number - Range: Years 1 to 9999, including dates before 1970 - Engine: Your browser's Date and Intl, with its time zone database - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: What is a Unix timestamp? A: The number of seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, not counting leap seconds. Many programs, logs and databases store time this way. A date before 1970 is a negative number. - Q: How does it know if my number is seconds or milliseconds? A: By its length. Up to 11 digits is read as seconds, 12 to 14 digits as milliseconds, and longer as microseconds. The page says which it assumed, and you can switch the unit yourself if it guessed wrong. - Q: Why does 2147483647 matter? A: It is the largest number a signed 32-bit integer can hold. As a timestamp it is 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. Systems that store time in 32 bits stop working correctly after that moment. - Q: What happens with a time the clocks skip or repeat? A: When the clocks go forward, a time in the skipped hour does not exist, so it moves forward by the gap. When they go back, a time in the repeated hour happens twice, so the first one is used. The page tells you when this happens. - Q: Is my data uploaded anywhere? A: No. Everything runs in your browser tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. ### File Converter: Convert any file URL: https://freethetools.com/everyday/file-converter/ Added: 2026-10-06 Convert images, audio, CSV, JSON, Markdown and HTML in your browser, one file or many. It detects each file's type. Nothing is uploaded. Drop any files. It works out what each one is and what it can become. Also called: file converter, convert files, png to bmp, png to ico, svg to png, webp to jpg, csv to json, audio to wav, mp3 to wav, markdown to html. Details: - Images: PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP, ICO, SVG and AVIF (where your browser can open it) to PNG, JPEG, WebP, BMP or ICO - Audio: Anything your browser can play, to 16-bit WAV at 44.1 kHz - Data: CSV, TSV and JSON (a list of objects) to each other - Documents: Markdown to HTML, HTML to Markdown, and either to plain text - Detection: By the file's first bytes, then its name - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Are my files uploaded? A: No. Each file is converted inside this tab, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending data anywhere. - Q: How does it know what a file is? A: It reads the first bytes of the file, where most formats sign themselves, and only then looks at the name. A PNG renamed to .txt is still treated as a PNG. - Q: Why can't it convert my file? A: It handles images, audio, CSV, JSON, Markdown and HTML so far. PDFs, Word and Excel files, video and HEIC photos are not supported yet. Request the conversion you need and it goes on the list. - Q: Why did my transparent PNG get a white background? A: JPEG and BMP can't store transparency, so those areas are filled with white. Choose PNG, WebP or ICO to keep it. - Q: What does the ICO file contain? A: Your picture at the standard icon sizes that fit inside it, from 16 to 256 pixels, fitted into squares without stretching. Windows and browsers pick the size they need. - Q: Why is the WAV file so large? A: WAV is uncompressed 16-bit audio. It opens everywhere and suits editing, but it's about ten times the size of an MP3. ### Time Zone Converter: Convert time zones URL: https://freethetools.com/everyday/time-zone-converter/ Added: 2026-09-27 Convert a time between cities and time zones, with daylight saving handled exactly and working hours marked. Free, no sign-up, works offline. Pick a time in one city and see it in others. Also called: time zone, convert time, meeting planner, utc, est to cet, world clock, daylight saving. Details: - Engine: Your browser's time zone database (Intl) - Daylight saving: Handled for the exact date you pick - Works offline: Yes, once the page has loaded Questions: - Q: Does it handle daylight saving? A: Yes. It uses your browser's built-in time zone database, so the offset is right for the date you choose, not just today. - Q: What counts as working hours? A: 08:00 to 18:00 local time. Times outside that are marked, so you can spot a bad meeting time at a glance. ### Unit Converter: Convert units URL: https://freethetools.com/everyday/unit-converter/ Added: 2026-09-27 Convert length, weight, temperature, cooking volumes, area, speed and data sizes as you type.
